Sewing Supply List

For any of my sewing classes, there are basic sewing tools that you will need to have. Everything on this list is essential to sewing and will need to be brought to class each week.

I think it goes without saying that you will need a sewing machine! I wrote a separate post HERE about my machine recommendations!

*Pro Tip: When shopping at Joann’s, be sure to download the app to receive coupons that you can use on your sewing tools and fabrics!!

Sewing Tools

There are several tools that you will need when sewing. You can purchase all of these items at Joann’s or Walmart, but for your convenience, I am attaching Amazon links where you can order from. This also gives you a visual of what you are looking for!

Fabric Scissors: Ginghers are the best for fabric!! I would definitely go with either Gingher or Fiskar brand. You can buy them online or use a coupon at Joanns. It is worth every penny to invest in good fabric scissors, rather than buying cheap fabric scissors.

Paper Scissors: You can pick these up cheap at Walmart or The Dollar Tree

Sewing Snippers: I also like to have small trimming scissors on hand; it makes trimming threads on projects a lot easier than with full-sized scissors!

Marking Pens and/or Marking Pencils: Either will work, though I do recommend getting 2 different colors. The pen is easier and shows up better, but the marking pencils are cheaper and you can get them in a pack with the seam guage ruler and measuring tape.

Extra Machine Needles: You will also need extra needles for your machine (if you don’t already have some). Needles break and need to be changed, and different fabrics may require different sized needles.

Extra Thread: Do not buy small multi-pack threads. Usually, the no-name, multi-pack of threads on Amazon are cheap, but they aren’t good. I recommend sticking with Coats and Clarks. I also recommend having at least black and white threads in your sewing box, and maybe adding other favorite colors (or threads to match fabric colors students select).

Extra Bobbins: Most machines come with some, but if you don’t have some, make sure to pick some up!

Sewing Box: You will probably want some kind of sewing box to keep your sewing supplies in as well.

Sewing Allowance Magnet: This is not required, but it makes sewing sooo much easier for beginners. When sewing, there are lines on your machine that you need to follow. This can be tricky for new (and young) sewers. This seam guage guide makes it so easy for beginners to learn how to sew straight lines! If you have a few extra dollars in your budget, I HIGHLY recommend it!!!

Rolling Bag: I highly recommend getting a bag to easily and safely transport your sewing machine to and from class.
