Bias Tape-Making Hack

Hi there! It’s been a few minutes since my last post. What can I say…the holidays get so crazy for me! We always have family in town visiting (this time we had visitors for 2 weeks straight) and everything around the holidays always seems to happen at my house. I hosted 6 holiday parties at my house within 10 days! It’s always great to spend time with family, but it’s also nice to get back into a routine (even if it has been slow-going).

I’ve fallen behind on my new YouTube sewing channel but I’m not gonna stress about it. I’m just going to pick myself up and keep on going. That’s all we can do, right? Keep moving forward.

This week I am just sharing a simple hack with you. Maybe you’ve seen this before, but maybe you haven’t. It’s a hack on how to make bias tape. I’ve put the demonstration on my YouTube video (shared at the end of the post), but I wanted to share a few notes about how to cut your bias tape here for reference.

  • Cut your bias tape into strips, on the bias (obviously, or it wouldn’t be bias tape). If you are new to sewing and don’t know what a bias is, it’s basically when the grainline is on a diagonal line (to explain it simply).
  • You can sew strips together to make the tape whatever length you need.
  • Cut your strips as follows:
-For single fold bias tape: Double the measurement that you want for your tape. For example, if you want 1/2″ bias tape, cut a 1″ strip
-For double fold bias tape: Quadruple your measurement that you want for your tape. So if you want it 1/2″ when you are finished, cut 2″ strips.
Check out my video!
