Easy Peasy Drawstring Backpack

Happy Monday! How is everyone doing? Hope this blog posts finds you well…and sewing! 🙂

Today I am sharing a tutorial with you about how to sew a drawstring backpack. I found this pattern from another sewing blogger and I’ve used it in my kid’s summer camps and classes. It’s super cute and fairly easy to make. Honestly I think the most challenging part of the whole thing is cutting the fabric. It’s a really great project for beginners and that’s why I use it with my students.

I had originally planned to do this project with my sewing students this semester, but of course the semester was cancelled partway through and we didn’t get to this project. I made a tutorial for them so they could have a visual aid in sewing all the pieces, but if you read patterns easily enough and don’t feel like you need a video guided tutorial, then go ahead and just skip right to the pattern.

I always think half the fun is picking out fabrics. I love mixing and matching prints that complement one another! You can choose to do the same fabric for the lining and the exterior of the bag, or you can mix it up and choose another fun print for the lining inside. Have fun with this!

The fabric cuts you will need are:

  • 2 exterior rectangles 17” x 15”
  • 2 lining rectangles 17” x 15”
  • 2 casing rectangles 3” x 14”
  • 2 loop squares 3” x 3”
  • 3 strips for the drawstrings, each 2” tall x width of fabric (42-44”)

I don’t want to take the credit for this pattern, so I am linking this with the person I got it from. She has a lot of great tutorials on her website, so be sure to check her out and show her some love <3 In the 3rd paragraph down, she has a link to click on to print out the directions. Print it out and keep it in your files!

Whether you need the video tutorial or not, I think it’s helpful to print out the pattern either way; that way you have it as reference. The video is helpful to hear and see it explained firsthand, especially for beginners. I’ve created this for my students, but I’m sharing it with anyone who wants it!

If you need a little bit more guidance and want a step-by-step video of how to sew this project, check out my video!
