How To Throw a Good Party For a New Senior Citizen

It’s my dad’s birthday week! His birthday was actually a couple of days ago; the 28th. I have been waiting for his birthday to roll around so I could blog about one of the most fun parties I’ve thrown: his senior citizen party!

A few years ago, my dad turned 55, which is the magical age where you officially become a senior citizen! I’d warned him ahead of time that I was going to throw him a birthday bash he would remember-even if he was starting to get senile! (Ha ha, see what I did there?) To celebrate his ripe old age, we decided to party like a bunch of senior citizens!

To get this party started, I told everyone to dress up like a senior citizen. Some people weren’t so fun; mostly the men in the group which is kind of funny because aren’t women supposedly more vain than men? Yet they didn’t want to dress themselves to be old. I guess we women just know how to have more fun. My aunt kept telling me we were gonna die when we saw what she was wearing. She kept us in suspense up until the moment she arrived. When she walked through the front door, I almost peed my pants with laughter (and not just because I was in full old-lady character). This is my 5’2″, 100 pound Aunt.

Pretty awesome, right??

I happened to have saved a couple of moo-moos from my grandma after she had passed away, so my outfit was already set. I picked up a grandma wig from Amazon, painted a few wrinkles on my face and voila, I aged myself 50 years. My bff (and sister-in-law) Natalie wore the other moo moo and put rollers in her hair. We added baby powder on top to whiten it up a bit. We found super stylish glasses and straps at the Dollar Tree that added just the right touch. Every time I look at this picture I die of laughter. We are gonna rock that nursing home for sure.

For our birthday boy, we rolled out a wheelchair for him to utilize throughout the night. He might have had a little too much fun in his chair!

For months beforehand, we saved old pill bottles and filled them with Mike ‘n Ike candies. If I remember correctly, we found free printable labels online that we stuck onto the bottles. Our tables were decorated with baskets of pills, which our guests kept popping all night long.

I think it goes without saying that we played Bingo at this party. I mean, what’s a senior citizen without Bingo, right? Natalie was in character all night. She was killing me with her old lady facial expressions.

No birthday for my dad is complete without homemade coconut cream pie. It is his favorite dessert and my mom used to make it for him every year. When she got sick, I took over the role of making him his pie.

We had a fun time celebrating and adding a little humor to his “old” age. I’m sure you all could come up with some great ideas for a senior citizen party, but here are some other fun ideas you can use:
