Description
This class is 6 class sessions and should be followed after completing the sewing basics class.
This class is for those who are serious about wanting to learn sewing techniques, clothing construction and how to read patterns. Students will learn about fabric preparation, how to properly measure/fit, cutting out patterns, pattern symbols (how to read patterns), etc. Students will complete 3 projects over the course of 6 weeks: a pillowcase, pajama pants and a zippered bag. Students will need to purchase the fabric for the first two projects (see below). I recommend purchasing their own pattern, but I know it can be hard to find, so I have a pattern they can use (class just takes a little longer if they have to share patterns). Be sure to check here for the rest of the sewing supplies you will need.
Patterns that will work for pajama pants:
Fabric:
First, make sure that you wash all of your fabrics before class!! Cotton shrinks, so if you sew something to fit without washing your fabric beforehand, your item will shrink and won’t be the right size. Second, the best places to buy fabric would be Hobby Lobby, Michaels or Walmart (unless you want to go to LA or Anaheim). All three carry 100% cotton, but Hobby Lobby might have a better selection of flannel.
Pillowcase (should be 100% cotton, no stretch):
- 5/8 yd of main fabric
- 1/3 yd of contrasting fabric
Pajama pants:
- 2 1/2 yards flannel (for adult sizes I’d recommend getting 3 yards to be safe)
I will provide fabric for the zippered bag.
