Old-Fashioned Sugar Cookies

A few weeks ago I was organizing my family recipes from my old, broken recipe box to my new, chic Rae Dunn recipe box that Jeff got me for Christmas. Wouldn’t you agree this recipe box is chic? I love the simplicity of Rae Dunn.

Anyway, while I was sorting through recipes, I came across one of our family recipes for Old-Fashioned Sugar Cookies. The recipe came from my grandma of course; I’ve told you all before about what an amazing cook she was, and I remember my mom making these cookies all the time when I was a kid. It’s been years since I have made them. Maybe it is the sentimental part of me that is always missing my mom, but coming across that recipe really made me want Mom’s sugar cookies.

Of course, I’m trying to cut back on my sugar (aren’t I always trying to do that??) I didn’t want to make them just to make them, but then I remembered that Cody’s 5th grade Colonial Day at school was coming up. The teacher sent home a sign up for parents to make cookies for tea time where they reenact a colonial tea. What better cookie to make for the tea than an old-fashioned sugar cookie?

In the end, I got to make my cookies, and eat them too! How cute are we looking here on Colonial Day? I made my dress a few years when my daughter was in 5th grade…but I feel bad because Cody’s costume just came from Amazon. Ha ha. It was much cheaper (and easier) than making one.

Also, let me just say a little something about my tea table. My mother-in-law was recently looking to give away her parent’s wedding china dishes and she really wanted to keep them in the family. When her girls didn’t want it, she asked if I wanted it and I’d already been browsing tea sets (knowing Colonial Day was coming up), so I told her heck yes I’d take them! They were absolutely perfect for our tea time and I love that we have this piece of history in our family that I can pass on to my girls. These dishes are probably getting close to a hundred years old; I think they were married some time in the late 20’s or early 30’s.

So now, without any further ado (did I spell that right?), I present to you our family’s recipe for Old-fashioned Sugar Cookies. Some people might call these Snickerdoodles; I’m not really sure what the difference is between snickerdoodles and sugar cookies aside from the cinnamon sugar topping, but grandma always called these old-fashioned sugar cookies, so that’s what we’re gonna keep calling them.

As always, here’s my picture of what you will need:

First, mix together your butter, sugar and vanilla.

Add your eggs and mix well.

Then, add your flour, once cup at a time (slowly) as well as your baking soda, baking powder and salt.

Add your sour cream. I had a handsome assistant helping me.

Now, set your dough aside for just a minute while you mix together your 1/4 cup sugar with your 1 teaspoon cinnamon. This will be used to sprinkle on top of your cookies.

Grease a cookie sheet, or you can put parchment paper on a cookie sheet and spray that. Whatever floats your boat. Scoop your dough by the rounded tablespoon onto the cookie sheet. Sprinkle your cinnamon sugar mixture on top.

Pop them into a preheated, 400 degree oven and bake for about 10 minutes or until the sides and bottoms are turning a light golden brown color. Transfer them to a cooling rack.

Mmm. I’m normally more of a chocolate kind of girl, but these cookies hit the spot. Plus, they were perfect tea time cookies!

Eat them now, or pin them for later!!
